If you think the Tuscaloosa Public Library is just two buildings filled with books, buckle up — because this week’s fun fact is all about how far our library really travels.
Sure, we have our two home bases — the main library on Jack Warner Parkway and the Weaver‑Bolton branch on Lanier Ave — but TPL doesn’t stay put. Not even close. According to our TPL staff, “with two physical buildings… we are expanding services across the county, including the bookmobile, vending libraries… Books To Schools… personalized delivery service to homebound residents, and Outreach programs in City and County schools.”
Translation? TPL is basically the most well‑read road tripper in Tuscaloosa County. Our bookmobile rolls out like a literary ice‑cream truck, except instead of popsicles you get mysteries, picture books, and the occasional Wi‑Fi hotspot. Our vending libraries pop up in places like Northport City Hall and the Bobby Miller and Faucett Activity Centers — perfect for grabbing a book the same way you’d grab a snack. And for readers who can’t make it out, we bring the library to them with personalized homebound delivery.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.
Through TPL, our community has access to a treasure chest of resources: print, large print, audiobooks, DVDs, music CDs, Wi‑Fi hotspots, world language and bilingual books, e‑books and digital audiobooks, 12 different online databases, genealogy and local history collections, and 205 public access computers and tablets, used by 50,000 people a year.
That’s right — 205 computers and tablets. Fifty thousand users. And at least one person who still says, “Wait, the library has what now?”
So whether you’re researching your family tree, downloading an audiobook for your commute, checking out a hotspot for the weekend, or watching the bookmobile roll into your neighborhood like a celebrity tour bus, just know this:
TPL isn’t just a place. It’s a whole network of ways to learn, explore, and stay connected — wherever you are in Tuscaloosa.
