The Sweetest Chapter in TPL History

Every library has its legends — the whispered stories, the “Did you know…?” moments that longtime patrons love to share. And here at the Tuscaloosa Public Library, one of our most delightful bits of history is this:

We once loaned out cake pans.

Yes, really. Not just any cake pans, either — we’re talking teddy bears, cartoon characters, hearts, stars, and the kind of elaborate shapes that make you look like a professional baker even if your true specialty is boxed mix and hope.

It was one of those wonderfully practical, wonderfully quirky services that only a public library would dream up. Because why should you buy a pan you’ll use once when you could borrow it, bake something magical, and return it with a smile?

Parents checked out pans for birthday parties. Teachers borrowed them for classroom celebrations. Grandparents used them to surprise grandkids with cakes shaped like dinosaurs or princess crowns.

And every pan came back with a story — sometimes literally, in the form of a frosting smudge someone swore they cleaned off.

It was a small service, but it carried a big truth: Libraries have always been about sharing joy, not just sharing books.

Today, our shelves look a little different. The cake pans have retired (probably somewhere sunny, with good frosting). But the spirit behind them is still here — the belief that a library should meet people where they are, spark creativity, and make life just a little sweeter.

And who knows? Maybe one day, a new generation of whimsical, unexpected items will find their way into our collection. After all, at TPL, you never quite know what you’ll discover next.

Did you or someone you know ever borrow a cake pan from TPL? Do you have a story or photo you would like to share? Please email us at tplfinfo@tplfund.org and tell us about it. You might find your tale in one of our next editions!
