1879
“Library Room” Opens

Tuscaloosa businessmen donate books from their private collections to establish a “Library Room” in a large parlor above a drugstore.

The basement of the old Tuscaloosa County Courthouse is converted into a “County Library” intended to serve every citizen of the county.

1911 “County Library” Opens

1947 Bookmobile Purchased

The library’s first Bookmobile is purchased to provide free library service to distant parts of the county.

The library moves into the historic Jemison–Friedman home.

1958 Friedman Library Opens

1959 Weaver Branch Built

A new branch library opens inside the Benjamin Barnes YMCA.

The library system relocates to its current site overlooking the Black Warrior River.

1979 Library Moves to Jack Warner Parkway

2010 New Weaver Bolden Branch Built

The branch is renamed Weaver Bolden and moves into a larger, modern building in the McKenzie Court community.

The Tuscaloosa Public Library Foundation (TPLF), a 501(c)(3), was established to serve the charitable and educational purposes of
the Tuscaloosa Public Library.
