Kids Are Tuscaloosa’s Most Powerful Readers
If you’ve ever wondered who the true power users of the Tuscaloosa Public Library are, here’s a fun fact that might surprise you: children check out more books than any other age group in our entire system.
According to our internal data, more than a quarter of a million juvenile books are checked out each year, compared to 185,505 adult books and 12,407 young adult titles. That means kids aren’t just reading — they’re reading a lot.
Why does this matter? Because every time a child checks out a book, they’re building vocabulary, curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong relationship with learning. And when a quarter‑million children’s books leave our shelves each year, it tells a powerful story about our community: Tuscaloosa families value reading, imagination, and access.
It also means our librarians stay busy keeping favorite series stocked, recommending new titles, and helping young readers discover the next book that will make them light up.
So the next time you walk past the children’s section and see a bustling crowd, know this: you’re witnessing one of the most joyful and impactful parts of our library’s mission in action.
Big readers start small — and Tuscaloosa’s kids are proving it every day.
